Cabinet on Stand II

If you look through a selection of photographs of James Krenov's work and don't read the captions carefully, it's easy to overlook just how small many of his cabinets on stand are. Few of them stand taller than five feet.

I designed this piece for a client with nine foot ceilings. Showing my first cabinet on stand in a variety of spaces has taught me that it can get lost in a taller space. In consulting with the client we discussed how prominent they wanted the piece to be and agreed on a six foot height.

At a certain height, the eye asks for something to terminate the piece visually. This is reflected in the design of period secretaries and highboys and tall-case clocks both period and contemporary. For this piece I combined a simple molding and negative space to provide the visual termination while remaining true to Krenov's elegant aesthetic.

Taking further inspiration from Krenov's work, there are bookmatched veneer and panels and continuous grain throughout the piece.

Walnut and hickory with oil-varnish finish. Starting at $7200.
